Lisa Curley has worked in insurance for twenty-six years and at Markham Insurance since 2014. Originally from Melrose, MA, she has a husband, three children, and two dogs. Lisa wants customers to know that, “We take pride in what we do because we’re concerned about our clients. We want to make sure they have what they need.” Lisa's incredible experience means she is more than capable of handling any of the needs of Markham Insurance's customers, but she primarily focuses on commercial insurance.
A typical day for Lisa involves taking care of customers, quoting businesses, doing certificates in a timely manner, completing plenty of paperwork, and making sure everything in general is running smoothly and correctly. What she enjoys most about her job is the people; Lisa enjoys talking to and getting to know her clients. “Markham clients are fun. I like interacting with everyone, they’re nice, and they’re helpful.”
One mistake Lisa often sees is customers making decisions based on price instead of coverage and then not having the correct coverage for what they need. Another mistake is not giving us enough information or full disclosure. For example, Lisa once had a customer who said her daughter was away for school and only home on weekends. When the daughter totaled the car, the claim was denied. It turned out the daughter had a parking space reserved in her name. “They check everything! Traffic cams, they talk to your neighbors, they investigate,” warns Lisa.
The oddest claim Lisa has ever handled involved a trucker who was hauling milk. The truck crashed and the milk spilled into a pond. “It’s considered pollution once it hits the pond and so everyone had to come in and clean it up.” It took a least a week to filter all of the water and get the pH back to normal.
In her free time, Lisa enjoys spending time with her friends and family, including watching her kids play sports (tackle and flag football, cheerleading, and softball), cooking, and playing with her dogs.
Michaela Bailey has worked at Markham Insurance since 2013. “All I know about insurance is from Markham!” Originally from Hubbardstown, Massachusetts, she lives with her dog, cat, and a seventy-five-gallon fish tank full of aquatic animals. Michaela reviews home owner renewals, makes payments, handles commercial certificates for customers, and makes commercial changes. Currently, Michaela's primary responsibility is personal insurance, but this quick-study is training in commercial insurance and will soon be working hand-in-hand with Lisa on a regular basis.
Michaela most loves working with customers. She describes Markham Insurance customers as very entertaining, interesting, thoughtful, and nice. “I have some people who write me thank you letters. I even have a customer who brings me wine every year!”
Common pitfalls Michaela often sees are people who have inadequate coverage to qualify for their loan or mortgage. In order to make sure they have adequate coverage, Michaela recommends customers contact the agency regarding their loan or mortgage company so that we can provide the correct information or coverage. Another mistake Michaela often sees is failing to completely read and ask questions about policies. “Some people do ask questions and I like that. I like that people want to know about their policy; that way, they’re prepared.”
Michaela once had a customer who, when asked if he wanted to add anything to his home policy such as artwork or silver, asked if he could add his goldfish. (The answer was no.)
When not working, Michaela loves to hike, enjoys photography, and playing with her “fur babies.” She often hikes Mt. Wachusett in Princeton, MA.
Emma Derr is the latest addition to S.J. Markham and Son, having joined the agency in August, 2016. Originally from Leominster, MA, she comes from a tightly knit family that is quite large (Emma has around 25 second cousins). With her bubbly personality and sharp sense of humor, Emma mans the front desk. She also takes phone calls, writes memos, makes digital copies, and handles the errands needed to keep the agency running smoothly. Emma recently began training in personal auto insurance and is quickly learning all she needs to know to help Markham customers with their personal auto claims.
As the agency’s secretary, Emma is the very first person most people see at Markham Insurance and works closely with customers. With nine years of experience in human services, Emma is well-prepared for working with all types of people. “Everyone tells us we’re like therapists!” She wants Markham customers to know, “We’re willing to help you in any possible way.” Emma is learning lots but her favorite part of the job is meeting new people and seeing new faces.
Pitfalls Emma often encounters involve customers who move but then fail to notify the agency. She will try to notify someone of a cancellation, but the phone number is no longer in service. Keeping contact information accurate, including providing email addresses, is an easy way to avoid this problem.
When not working, Emma enjoys spending time with her friends and family. The latest addition to Emma’s household is her adorable Shih Tzu-Poodle mix puppy, Maci.
